1. m. Árbol de la familia de las Ulmáceas, que crece hasta la altura de 20 m, con tronco robusto y derecho, de corteza gruesa y resquebrajada, copa ancha y espesa, hojas elípticas o trasovadas, aserradas por el margen, ásperas y lampiñas por la haz, lisas y vellosas por el envés y verdes por ambas caras, flores precoces, de color blanco rojizo, en hacecillos sobre las ramas, y frutos secos, con una semilla oval, aplastada, de ala membranosa en todo su contorno, verde al principio y amarillenta después, de rápido desarrollo. Abunda en España, es buen árbol de sombra y de excelente madera.

Elm butterfly (Zo"ol.), one of several species of
butterflies, which, in the caterpillar state, feed on the
leaves of the elm (esp. {Vanessa antiopa} and {Grapta

Elm moth (Zo"ol.), one of numerous species of moths of
which the larv[ae] destroy the leaves of the elm (esp.
{Eugonia subsignaria}, called elm spanworm).
Elm sawfly (Zo"ol.), a large sawfly (Cimbex Americana).
The larva, which is white with a black dorsal stripe,
feeds on the leaves of the elm.
